A Passion for Storytelling

Filmmaker Claudia Medina was first drawn to her craft by a desire to explore the family stories she heard while growing up, enriched by the cultural connections of her Italian-Mexican heritage. After 25 years of working and traveling in Europe, Latin America and other places around the world, she returned to her hometown of Powell River, still passionate about telling stories through the medium of film. It’s an interest she sees reflected on Knowledge.

“Knowledge offers the possibilities for people to delve into perspectives and ideas and points of view that may differ from their own or that they haven’t seen represented in other places,” she says. “I know there are a lot of filmmakers that have been supported in their vision through Knowledge. And I think that’s really, really critical as we start to understand the makeup of this province. We need to have as many voices out there as possible telling our stories.”

After participating as a viewer for quite a while, Claudia felt it was time to step into the next level of support and become a Knowledge Partner. “As the media landscape becomes increasingly privatized, it seems like it’s even more important to have spaces that are public—that allow us to feel a sense of ownership. To me, Knowledge is a space where we can actually exchange ideas, listen to others, be influenced and perhaps share. It’s one of those things that I feel enriches us all.”
