Knowledge Kids Programming
As a public educational broadcaster, Knowledge Network serves the developmental needs of children by curating a wide range of thoughtful, inclusive and entertaining stories from producers across Canada and around the world.
Targeted at children aged 2-8, Knowledge Kids programming supports the cognitive, social, physical and emotional development of young learners. Our line-up of high-quality shows covers a range of learning areas that includes language and literacy, math, science, the environment and natural world, cultures, and social studies.
We look for engaging, socially-responsible, programs that children from all backgrounds and abilities will see themselves reflected in. Programs should have age-appropriate learning goals integrated into series concept and storylines. Producers may require input from an educational advisor to ensure those learning goals are realized in the research, writing or design of the series.
Free and commercial-free, Knowledge Kids content is broadcast in B.C. on Knowledge Network and streams across Canada via the knowledgekids.ca website and Knowledge Kids streaming video apps, available anytime for children and their families to explore. When entering into a license agreement, we require both broadcast and Internet streaming rights for all shows.
Second-Window Children’s Pre-Licenses
Knowledge Network has limited funding and does not develop nor commission original kids’ series as a lead broadcaster.
Canadian and BC producers who have secured a first-window commitment from another Canadian broadcaster (eg. TVO, TFO, SRC) may submit a proposal anytime for second-window consideration.
Knowledge Network does not provide development funding nor pre-development letters of support for children’s programming.
For kids’ series, we require a high volume of episodes (eg. 26-65 episodes): we do not pre-license one-off shorts. We require a range of lengths (eg. Series 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, 11:00 23:00) to build the Knowledge Kids broadcast schedule.
Producers who receive a pre-license commitment are responsible for raising the series funding and ensuring the production will be eligible as certified Canadian content for a CRTC C Number or Cavco number.
Before submitting your proposal, we encourage you to take some time to familiarize yourself with our children’s content on our knowledgekids.ca website or the K:Kids streaming video app in Canada.
Submitting a Proposal for a Children’s Series
BC and Canadian producers may submit a proposal by email to producers@knowledge.ca.
A proposal should include:
- Brief synopsis
- Treatment (details on format, length, style, voice, theme, approach), with sample artwork
- Episode outlines/springboards and sample script if available
- Financing plan, noting confirmed funding or commitments
- Budget top sheet
- Proposed production schedule or anticipated delivery dates
- Resumes of key creative personnel
- Animation sample, demo or pilot (as available)
Proposals are evaluated on an ongoing basis and we will respond within 4-6 weeks. Projects that do not have a first-window broadcast commitment may not receive an answer within that timeframe.
Children’s Acquisitions
We welcome submissions of high-quality, completed series targeting children 2-8 from domestic and international producers and distributors.
