Family Time
Saturday is pizza night for Linda Rowley and her grandchildren: Maya, age ten, and Logan, age seven. And not just delivery. They make it themselves – mixing the dough, rolling it out, cooking the sauce, putting on the toppings – and once it’s baked, they eat their pizza in front of the TV and watch Knowledge. Even better, once they’re done they put on their pajamas, get a bowl of treats each, and then all three of them cuddle up in Linda’s bed for some more TV. It’s their special time – one that Linda cherishes for the memories they’re creating together. She loves being a grandma – or Nana as the grandchildren call her – having moved to Burnaby from Ontario when Maya was on the way so she could help out and be part of their lives.
Their favourite show to watch? Murdoch Mysteries! Both kids like watching for clues and trying to figure out “whodunnit” before the end – and usually they’re right. Linda appreciates the fact that no matter your age or interests, there’s something for everyone on Knowledge. “It’s not just for adults, it’s for children too. It’s good family viewing, and family is very, very big with me.”
Giving back is another thing that’s big with Linda, who’s been a Knowledge Partner since moving here and discovering how much the programming appealed to her. “We’ve been friends ever since,” she says. Her love of a good mystery isn’t the only thing she’s passed on to Maya and Logan, who at a young age already know the importance of donating to Knowledge. Together they support a lot of other causes too, such as the toy drive or whatever else is in need in the wintertime. Linda has a box set up in her apartment for the food bank and everyone donates. “I think giving back is very important because we receive so much,” she says. “And I get so much enjoyment out of it. I like being able to share that with my grandchildren.“
